Help us save the mermaids

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that plastic is becoming a big problem. Especially when it ends up in our oceans; it can fatally harm our sea life, chemicals from plastic can poison our sea creatures and when we eat food from the ocean plastic gets into our own bodies too. 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the sea each year - that’s like adding 57,000 blue whales! Now that is a BIG problem.

Most plastics are easy to recycle but they take at least 450 years to break down in the ocean. Drop a bottle on the street today and it could wash up while your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren are playing on the beach! Recent programs like Blue Planet 2 have helped us to understand how big the plastic problem is and the good news is that more and more people and organisations are starting to take action.

At Green City Events we have teamed up with Brecon Carreg Mineral Water to run a new, exciting campaign that will help raise awareness of the problems of plastic waste and encourage more people to recycle and reduce the plastic in their life. Very talented local artist, Antonia Salter has been working with us to create two beautiful life size mermaid tails, made entirely from plastic waste! They will be touring some of Wales’ biggest running events this year.

If you join our Save the mermaids campaign you’ll get to meet some mermaids (and even transform into one yourself!), you’ll learn a bit more about what types of plastic are causing problems and most importantly we’ll share our practical tips about what YOU can do to start reducing and recycling plastic waste right now. Bring your friends, bring your family and help us spread this really important message.

Where can you find us?

We’ll be at these five major running events in South Wales this year. Come and find our colourful campaign tent and help us save the mermaids…
