Pop up food waste cafes and cook ups

Green City Events delivered this project in 2015/16 as part of the Love Food Hate Waste 10 Cities campaign. The aim was to help local people in South East Cardiff learn to reduce their food waste and save money on food bills. In collaboration with local organisations, Lia’s Kitchen and Cynefin Cardiff we delivered a series of pop up roadshows and 2 cook ups.

At the roadshows Lia’s kitchen prepared two types of cake inspired by recipes that use commonly left over ingredients. Visitors were encouraged to make food waste pledges and take useful leaflets and free food waste tools. The roadshows were very popular and there was never any cake leftover!

At the cook ups, led by Lia’s Kitchen participants learned to cook a tasty selection of dishes that were made from food that is often wasted at home. Participants also took part in activities that helped them learn about correct food storage and portioning and went home with a goody bags of tools and information. Both cook ups were fully booked and had waiting lists.
